Muhammad Sidiq has worked 24 years for a poverty wage as an outsourced casual worker at Khanewal. His pay was cut in retaliation for joining the union Action Committee to fight for his rights.

"I started at the Unilever Khanewal factory in 1985. Ive been on the job for 24 years and Im just getting 260 Rupees (a little over 3 US dollars). Recently younger workers are getting promoted and higher pay as a reward for not joining the Action Committee. A junior with just 4 years on the job is getting 280 Rupees for doing the same work as me.

Since the Lipton Khanewal workers formed their Action Committee to fight for their rights, members have been denied work, demoted and pushed into even deeper poverty in an attempt to break their resistance. At the same time, some 100 new contract workers - with no experience, skills, or seniority (over 20% of the workforce) have been taken on in the midst of what the company contends is a production downturn but is clearly a show of force to weaken the Action Committee and the IUF.
