Landmark Union Agreement with Starwood Group in Italy

Following a national union mobilization in response to proposed outsourcing and redundancies Italian IUF affiliate FILCAMS-CGIL has entered into a landmark national agreement with the transnational Hotel Chain Starwood Group.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. is a hospitality ownership, management, and franchise organization based in New York. .One of the world's largest hotel companies, it owns, operates, franchises and manages hotels, resorts, spas, residences, and vacation ownership properties under its nine owned brands (St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Westin, Le M�riden, Sheraton, Four Points, Aloft, and Element). The company employs 155,000 people globally in over 925 properties. The chain operates over 30 hotels in Italy, including the Sheraton properties in Milan and Rome.

Under the terms of the agreement negotiated with the union, there will be no outsourcing of jobs, redundancies will be on a voluntary basis only and seasonal workers will be guaranteed a minimum employment period.

The number of overtime hours employees can work has been limited to 160 per year, and the agreement guarantees every worker weekly rest days.

There will also be guaranteed production bonus of 600 Euros for every worker in 2009. The agreement also fixes the maximum number of rooms to be cleaned by housekeeping staff per shift, to protect worker health and safety. Supplementary company level agreements will be negotiated to agree on local issues.
