In the run-up to the August 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the IHLO (International Hong Kong Liaison Office maintained by the international trade union movement and the independent trade unions of Hong Kong) has launched an on-line campaign to free imprisoned labour activists in China. The Chinese government and the International Olympic Committee both promoted Beijing as host to the 2008 games by encouraging the notion that the event would promote human rights in China. Developments have not confirmed this promise, and a significant number of labour rights activists continue to be imprisoned (click here for a list of those currently detained).
