Developing company-wide union structures is a key organizing and recruitment strategy for the IUF-affiliated Indonesian hotel and tourism workers' federation FSPM, which has now formed a Hyatt-Indonesia Union Council. The council, which held its founding convention on January 11-12 at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta, integrates unions from 6 of the 7 Hyatt brand hotels in the country. Five of the council members are currently FSPM members. The Arya Duta Jakarta Hotel union will affiliate in early February, leaving only the Hyatt Surabaya outside the FSPM.

The council will coordinate collective bargaining within the Hyatt hotels with the goal of achieving a national framework agreement by the end of 2005. Similar coordination efforts are underway at the Starwood (10 hotels) and Accor (30) chains, where company-wide union meetings will be held later this year.
