The consequences for agricultural employment of EU enlargement are discussed in an Opinion issued in January by the European Economic and Social Committee, an EU consultative body made up of representatives of employers associations, trade unions and various civil society organisations. The paper warns that unless measures are taken, the already high levels of unemployment in rural areas will rise even further. It also examines seasonal and migrant work, improved social security provision and training for agricultural workers.
