The UK Transport and General Workers' Union (T&G) has condemned Nestl's decision to close its chilled desserts factory in Staverton, Wiltshire, as an act of "pure greed." Closure of the Staverton factory "will have a devastating impact on the local community, as it is a key provider of jobs for the village of 400 people", says T&G national organizer Brian Revell. Noting that Nestl management confirms that the plant is efficient and profitable, Revell denounced the company's fait accompli and "failure to consult in a meaningful way by claiming there is no other solution."

Nestl UK followed its mid-March announcement of the Staverton closure with the notification of plans to cut 270 jobs at its Halifax plant. The union has pledged to fight the closure and job cuts through action in the UK and, with the support of the IUF and its European regional organization EFFAT, internationally.
